Face Defined

The portion of a cattle hide between the animal's cheeks.
Fat tanned The use of animal fats to convert hide or skin into leather. Leads to the fixation of fatty matter.
Fatliquoring The addition of oil and associated fatty substances to regulate the final softness and strength of the leather.
Finish The introduction of a surface coating during the final stage or stages of the manufacture of dressed leather, such as spraying, waxing or embossing.
Finishing Provides protection, as well as an even colour and gloss, corrects handle and conceals grain defects when necessary.
Flesh split Mechanically separated inner or under layer of a hide or skin.
Fleshing and Splitting After liming, the flesh is mechanically separated from the hide or skin, which is then split layer-wise on a band knife machine, giving a grain split and a flesh split. For example, small skins-pigskins, calfskin and some cattle hides.
Flexible bend Pliable sole leather bend that has been tanned and finished. Often buffed on the grain and flesh sides.
Flexible split Pliable bottom leather made from the flesh split of a cattle hide.
Fluffing Mechanical process similar to Buffing but applied to the flesh instead of grain side.
Fore end A strip of leather of convenient width cut from the fore end of a bend. See Range.
Formaldehyde tanned Leather tanned with formaldehyde (formali). See Aldehyde leather, Doeskin.
Frized leather Untanned leather from which the grain layer of the hide or skin has been removed, either by scraping with a special knife or by machine.
Front The fore part of a horse hide or the shoulders and fore shanks of a raw cattle hide.
Full Leather made from an unsplit, or full thickness, hide or skin. Retains the genuine grain texture of the natural hide. Can indicate leather tanned using one agent only.
Full chrome (tanned) Leather tanned with one agent only, e.g. full chrome rather than semi-chrome.
Full grain Leather made by the removal of the epidermis, leaving the original grain surface exposed with none of the surface removed by buffing, sniffing or splitting.
